Gina Truesdale
For Gina, participating in the Casey Cares 5K is deeply personal. She began running and walking in memory of her son, Abraham “Hammy” Scrivner, who was part of the Casey Cares family and inspired the creation of the Hammy’s Heart Program.
The most meaningful part of the experience is knowing that every step helps support families who now need the same care and encouragement that Casey Cares provided to her own family. Getting an early morning workout is an added benefit, but Gina’s true motivation comes from honoring Hammy and giving back.
There is also one thing Gina never runs or walks without: a new, customized Hammy T-shirt.
Her advice for anyone beginning to incorporate running or walking into their lifestyle is simple and encouraging.
“Thirty minutes of walking a day is all you need,” Gina shared.
Gina first learned about the Casey Cares Foundation through a social worker at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Since then, she has remained connected to the organization and its mission of providing uplifting programs and lasting memories for critically ill children and their families.
Gina initially became involved with the Casey Cares 5K as a volunteer, eager to help support the foundation that had meant so much to her family. Today, her participation is about more than completing the course. It is a way to celebrate Hammy’s life, support other Casey Cares families and continue sharing his legacy with every step.
