Ono Okojie
Ono’s journey with running has been fueled by a lifetime of movement and an even deeper passion for purpose. From growing up playing sports like track & field and field hockey, to pushing herself through CrossFit, Spartan Races, and trail runs, she’s always found joy in staying active and setting new goals.
“Making goals for myself and seeing what I’m capable of is what inspires me to keep signing up for races,” she shared.
But what Ono enjoys most is the magic of race day: the music, the community, the fun atmosphere — and the feeling of coming together for a meaningful cause. “Running brings stillness to my mind,” she said. “It’s one of the only things that makes me feel truly present — I love the runner’s high and zoning out to my playlists.”
Her essentials? A trusty fanny pack or camelback, good snacks, great music, and friends by her side.
Ono offers powerful advice to anyone just starting their walking or running journey:
“Listen to your body. Life has ups and downs, just like running. Start where you are, be flexible, and give yourself grace. Goals are great — but your joy matters, too.”
Ono first heard about Casey Cares through her brother, who ran the 5K years ago with his baseball team. That moment led her to volunteer with the foundation — and now, four years later, she’s still deeply involved.
“This will be my 4th Casey Cares 5K,” she said. “As someone in medical school and someone who’s faced health challenges of my own, I understand how important it is to support families through difficult times. I love advocating for others, and I’m so excited to do it again this year — for the kids!”
