Joel Nathanson
For Joel, running is a family affair. Encouraged by his adult children — all marathon runners — he signed up for his first 5K at the Baltimore Running Festival over a decade ago. That one race launched a new chapter in his life, and he hasn’t looked back since.
“I’ve done a number of 5Ks, 10Ks, and 5-milers since then,” he shared. “The best part is the feeling of accomplishment when I’ve finished.”
Joel never runs without his hydration belt, always prepared with his own water supply. “You can never be sure whether the hydration stations will be there when you need them,” he said — a tip any seasoned runner will appreciate.
His advice for new runners?
“Learn to keep your mind occupied with something else while you’re running — that way, you’re not so focused on how tired your body feels.”
Joel first connected with the Casey Cares Foundation while looking for a meaningful way for his dental practice to give back. “I wanted my team to actually see and meet the people they were helping. That makes the idea of giving back more real and concrete.”
Since then, the Casey Cares 5K has become a tradition. “Casey Cares does wonderful, important work,” he said. “And the 5K is always a great event.”
